The Legend of Xanadu

Let me take you to a darker place… where roller-skate discos are still open

I have recently covered Xanadu by Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John. I have not done many cover versions in my life, this wasn’t supposed to happen either.

But a few months ago, being mostly home bound looking after my end-of-life, very old cat, both because he needed it and I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible before the time comes, I started to play a lot more on my guitar than before. Being bored with the few songs I knew how to play, I started playing around with songs I liked, one of them being Xanadu.

It was the deepest January. It was dark by the time I finished working, the world got smaller and smaller. Beyond the depression, there is something magical about this period. Everything becomes intimate and quiet. So when I started plucking the chords, and singing along, a whole new world opened. You sometimes do not notice the beauty of the melody, the finesse of the words with songs in high production songs.

If you can, however, I recommend you slowly strip them down, and get intimate with them. You may open up aa new world.

A place, where nobody dared to go.

  1. Such a beautiful testament to the time you spent with your cat. The song feels the same way Amsterdam feels in January. It’s one of my favorite times to visit. The dark and cold make the short days precious, and the long nights magical.
